CWSC frequently asked questions

Who can enter?
Anyone can enter, from leisure swimmers to the more competitive, so long as you have acclimatised to cold water.

How do I enter?
Enter online between 18 November 2018 and 7 January 2019. Entry is on a first come first served basis. Entrants will receive confirmation by email that their application has been accepted.

How do I pay?
Payment will be taken online using a secure online payment system.

Can I enter on the day?
No. The closing date for races is 7 January 2019 or sooner if it sells out.

Do I have to race or can I just swim?
The less competitive can take part by taking the plunge and joining in our Big Splash. Register here to plunge for our chosen charity, Crisis, as part of the opening ceremony or enter on the day for an icy plunge in the dipping lane.

Will there be anything to eat or drink?
There will be stalls selling hot food and drinks.

Can friends and family come and support me?
Of course, we want as many people to come on the day and there will be a grandstand for shelter in case it rains or snows. There will be an entry fee of £3 for spectators.

How many people do we expect?
About 600 swimmers and lots of spectators.

Where can I park?
Parking is very limited. We encourage people to take public transport if at all possible. See getting there section.

Can I bring along my dog?
No animals are permitted in the Lido (save guide/assistance dogs, penguins, seals and polar bears).

RaceCan I wear a wetsuit?
Sorry, this is the Cold Water Swimming Championships, so it is standard swimming costumes only.

How long are the races?
Races are all 30 metres, plus a 90m freestyle race.

Will there be heated areas?
Hot showers and a hot tub will be available and, of course, there is the Finnish sauna. There are no indoor spaces at the Lido but there will be changing tents with some heating. And there will be the grand marquee with stalls.

What should I bring with me?
It is January, you’ll be outside and you’ll be swimming in near freezing conditions so please ensure that you bring layers of warm clothing that you can get into and out of easily. Gloves and hats are also advised.

Which age group will I be in?
According to FINA rules the age groups are determined by your age on 31 December 2019.
